St Mawes Information

St Mawes is a delightful sailing and fishing village situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the south coast of Cornwall.  It lies on the east bank of the Carrick Roads opposite the larger  town of Falmouth.  The Carrick Roads is a large waterway which forms  an immense natural harbour, the third largest in the world.  Many large and small craft traverse this stretch of water, and there is always something to see either from the view point up at  St. Mawes Castle overlooking the Roads, or from the picturesque St. Mawes Quayside overlooking the harbour. There are many lovely waterside and country walks and with unspoilt vistas in the area, much of the surrounding land being in the care of the National Trust.

There are several good restaurants and pubs in the village, together with a general supermarket, a butchers and a bakery shop, two delicatessens, a coffee shop, a post office/newsagents and a bank, and there are also several specialist gift shops/art galleries.  Fresh fish is also sold from the kiosk on the quay when weather permits.  It has two small beaches situated at either end of the main shopping street and the village also has a Tourist Information Centre  and a daily bus service running to the surrounding villages and into the Cathedral City of Truro.

There is an excellent year-round foot passenger ferry service to Falmouth operating from the Quay  to Falmouth with its Harbour and The National Maritime Museum, galleries, shops and beaches (being  less than a mile away by sea).  The nearby King Harry Car Ferry links Falmouth, Truro and beyond by car all year round. The Place foot Ferry links the SW Coastal path to St. Anthony peninsula and operates from good Friday to the end of October.  The Eden Project, Heligan and many other lovely gardens in South Cornwall can be easily reached by car.
